Second Saturday Open Market, hosted by the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce, made its debut on April 13, from 8 AM to 2 PM, with a constant crowd of visitors. The influx of people on Main  and Van Buren Streets was also profitable to other businesses in and around Warsaw.
“After talking to managers of brick and mortar businesses like the Antique Mall, and Wooden Wagon, it was estimated that about 750 people came into town,” said Mac Vorce, Chamber Director. “Even Joiner’s Dounuts, further down Main Street, reported that it sold out of donuts by 11:15 AM.”
The first Second Saturday event attracted 23 vendor booths selling a great variety of “interesting” wares. There were garage sale items, crafts, and jellies, to name a few. It was reported that one lady sold “a ton” of dream catchers.
“Several visitors spoke to me about being glad that this wasn’t Jubilee Days, because they had more time to visit the limited number of booths,” said Vorce. “I have been going to many local prosperity meetings during the year where new growth was discussed. This Open Market is the kind of thing that can help small downtowns. The goal is to have about 200 to 500 people during each Second Saturday.”
Vorce said that even though the crowds were large, no one complained about the lack of parking, or congestion in shopping areas. He said that the crowds came in a constant flow instead of all at once.
Three more Second Saturday Open Markets will be held this year in Warsaw, on May11, July 13, and August 10. There are still some openings for vendor booths, but Vorce said they are going fast.  More information can be found on the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce Facebook page, or by calling 660-438-5922.
Another popular Warsaw market that has been open on Saturday mornings from 8 AM to 12 Noon since 2009, is the Farmer’s Market at 1551 Commercial Street (by Orscheln Farm and Home Store.) It provides locally grown and handmade farm products. It opens up for the season on Saturday, May 11 and will run until October.
