He was born December 30, 1941, in Windsor, Mo., the son of Walter Dale Ekstrand and Thelma Irene (Kindle) Ekstrand. Gene served his country in the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1963 in the K-9 Unit. He also served in the National Guard for a brief period of time. While working at the International Shoe Factory in Windsor he met his beautiful wife, Carolyn Sue Hood. They were married on January 26, 1964, at the Assembly of God in Marshall, Mo., and have enjoyed almost 57 years of marriage.
He worked for MFA as a fertilizer manager while pastoring Assembly of God Church, Nelson, Mo. In 1984 he and his family moved to Windsor to become the full-time pastors at Assembly of God of Windsor. After 36 years of ministry in the Windsor community, he announced his retirement in November and God called him home one day short of completing his final day as Pastor. He was a former member of the Twin Lakes Hospice Board and was currently serving on the Henry County 911 Commission. He served as Assemblies of God Clinton Section Presbyter for 20 years.
Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing, and most of all, time with family. His unwavering faith in God was a testimony to countless individuals and families over his lifetime. No matter where he was, he touched the lives of those he met.
He will be remembered for his faithfulness to God, his compassion for people, his dedication to the community of Windsor, and his commitment to the church he dearly loved.
