When the school board went looking for a superintendent two years ago, they wanted someone with educational experience and values as well as someone who would take an active interest in Warsaw’s sports programs. What they received was a man who had 22 years of former coaching experience in basketball, baseball and football. Not only that but Shawn Poyser has a state championship baseball title to his list of many achievements.
His coaching history is as follows.
Stockton:  1991-97
Pierce City    97-98
Clever:         99-00
Sparta:      2000-13
Linn:          2013-16 (Supt.)
Warsaw:    2016- Present
His achievements include:
Basketball: 220-140 overall. Three district championships, two Regionals, State Quarterfinalist in 2004: four Conference Titles. Sparta’s all-time winning coach (200). four time conference coach of the Year
Baseball:  137-47 overall record, four Conference titles, three District Championships, three Sectional Titles, three Quarterfinalists, two Final Fours, the 2003 State Championship, four time Conference Coach of the Year and 2003 Class 1 State Coach of the Year.
Football: Assistant football coach on two undefeated regular season teams: 1993, Stockton (lost to Warsaw) 1997, Pierce City.
Since he began here he has been seriously involved with Warsaw’s two new conferences decisions and with the installation of the new youth football league. He also had a part, along with former A.D. and now JBMS Principal Billy Daleske, in hiring football coaches Ryan Boyer and Danny Morrison and boys basketball coach Scott Floyd.
Coaches Boyer and Morrison brought the 28 game losing streak to an end and went 5-6. They helped Warsaw to their first district game win in several years before losing to seven time defending state champion Lamar in the semi-finals of district play.
Coach Floyd’s team has already won six games compared to the two they won all last year before his arrival this season.
Poyser currently coaches Warsaw youth football and basketball. He has 21 years at the varsity level and four years at the youth level. So to say Warsaw received someone with a sports background might be a huge understatement to say the least.
If you listened to the Warsaw football games on BCE TV on City Link, then you heard Dr. Poyser doing half time interviews and some color commentary in the third and fourth quarters of several home games. His enthusiasm for sports were very apparent to all of the listeners.
So Warsaw sports is heading in the right direction, thanks to Dr. Poyser, Principal Daleske, the coaching staff, parents, kids and a host of others.
