Sheriff's Dispatch

Eric Knox
Benton County Sheriff
Hello from the Sheriff’s Office,
I’m sure you’ve heard by now that we will be seeing a one half cent sales tax initiative on the ballot on April 3rd for a redesigned and relocated jail facility.  I want to address some of the misinformation I’ve heard around the area regarding the proposal. First, that the county has already purchased the proposed property at 7 Highway and Main Street in Warsaw, (Old 65), this is not true. The county has established a contract with the owner that is contingent upon the passage of the sales tax initiative; no tax, no sale. Another rumor I’ve heard is that there are additional hidden costs. Those of you who know me personally know I am a what you see is what you get person. Cost has been a key issue for me since before I came into office and waste is not something I will stand behind. The price of the facility is estimated at ten million, this amount covers everything. The land, building, professional fees, furnishings and equipment, there are no hidden costs. Another bit of hearsay floating around is that the proposed facility is much larger than we need. The size, design and bed count of the facility was derived from our own statistical data taken from our records here at the jail. The jail needs to fit our needs not only now but into the future.  I ask you to educate yourself on the facts. Seek out your own sources for information on jail construction. Contact other counties that have constructed similar size facilities and have been through this process.
I am happy to answer your questions but encourage you to follow the same path I did to find out the facts. I challenge you to seek out the truth and not take just anyone’s word as gospel. If you have questions, please call me or attend one of the three town hall style meetings planned. The first meeting is at Cole Camp City Hall Tuesday, March 13 at 6:00 P.M. The second meeting is scheduled for the Warsaw Shrine Club, Tuesday, March 20th at 6:00 P.M. The third meeting is scheduled for Lincoln at the Lincoln High School Library Meeting Room, Thursday, March 22nd at 6:00 P.M. There is also a video available on (Search “Benton County Missouri jail proposal”) If you are on Facebook you can also find it on our Facebook page, Benton County MO Sheriff’s Office.
We had a fantastic turn out for the seminar regarding CCW vs Constitutional Carry last Friday night at the Warsaw Knights of Columbus Hall. The building was packed with citizens wanting to know about the laws that changed in January of 2017 and their rights. Thank you to the Friends of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office and Sergeant Grant Johnson of the Warsaw Police Department who put the information together and weathered the storm. A big thanks also to the Knights for donating the space. Without all of you this would not have been possible! We hope to bring more good training to you in the near future like a personal self-defense class and other topics of interest.
Thank you Benton County for your support,
Sheriff Knox
