Lincoln's Waterloo Ends Their Season

Posted

Well, it is over. Lincoln's survival season is over. The Cardinals lost 29-24 to Wellington-Napoleon on the road last Friday, ending their season at 2-7. They lost last week 31-30 at home to the same Well-Nap squad.

This time it was in the last :12 seconds of the game on a pass play in their Class 1 District 3 matchup.

For the second week in a row, Lincoln was without their coveted sophomore quarterback Riley Sanders. Fellow sophomore Dawson Parrott stepped in again and carried the ball a school record 45 times.

Asked about all of the carries, Coach Brad Drehle said, "The carries weren't planned. We knew he would carry a heavy load, but did not expect 45 carries."

He went on to say, "I was proud of our effort.  We played hard and made some really good plays, but in the end we made too many mistakes."

The coach added, "We grew up over the course of the season.  We dealt with injuries and with being short handed.  These young men hung in there and represented themselves, our school and this community well.  This one hurts because it is the last one for this year.  We will miss Xavier Smith and what he provided.  We are excited to see what kind of off season we can put together and how much we can improve."

Parrott ran 45 times for 224 yards as Wellington keyed on him the entire game. He had 2 TD's and two 2 point conversions. Last week, he was went for 313 yards on 35 carries with 4 TD's against the same team.

Well-Nap,  now 3-7, will travel to North Platte this Friday for a district semifinal.

Lincoln finished their season at 2-7.

The BCE will have a complete wrap-up story of the Cardinals season next week.

Don't miss it.
