Jacob Luebbert (Warsaw, MO/Warsaw HS) had a throw in the opening round of the weight throw Friday afternoon to put him into the finals of the event at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, then had his second-best throw of the season in the final round to move up to fourth place to earn All-America honors in the event.
Luebbert had a throw of 65-11½ to begin his day, which put him into second place after the first round of the second flight was completed. He dropped to fifth after round two and entered the finals in that same position. But after a throw of 65-6.25 in the fourth round and a foul in round five, Luebbert uncorked a throw of 67-8.75 in the final round to move up one spot in the final standings.
The sixth round throw was just one-quarter of a inch off of his school record set earlier in the season.
The fourth place finish, which earned Luebbert his first All-America award as he was competing at the national meet for the first time, was the highest finish by a Miner at the NCAA's indoor championships since 2009, when Jordan Henry took second in the pole vault.
Missouri Southern's Peyton Barton won the weight throw title with a mark of 72-2.5.
Luebbert is a 2019 graduate of Warsaw High School and is now a senior at Missouri S&T, majoring in Chemical Engineering.
He is the son of Randy and Michelle Luebbert.
