Big Third Quarter For Crest Ridge Proves Too Much For Winless Bluebirds

Crest Ridge spoiled Homecoming for the Cole Camp football team and their fans with a 47-21 thumping of the Bluebirds on Friday night.

In a strange turn of events, two Crest Ridge skill players broke their arms on the very first play of the game. We wish them both speedy recoveries.

The fans saw a very competitive first half with the score being 26-21 with Cole Camp in striking range.

However, the visiting Cougars came out strong in the third quarter. After establishing their passing attack in the first half, quarterback Wesley Taylor demonstrated his running game as he did the week before in a 50-31 loss to Lincoln.

Crest Ridge scored in the first quarter on a 24-yard pass to Wyatt Gavin. The PAT failed but it was 6-0.

In the second, Bluebird's quarterback Grant Rodriguez tied the game with a 10-yard run and it was 6-6 after a failed PAT at the 8:25 mark.

Crest Ridge scored again in just 22 seconds of game clock on a 55-yard catch and run on four plays.

Cole Camp scored on a nice 36-yard pass from Rodriguez to Connor Peterson and this time the PAT was good, now makikng it 13-12.

Taylor hit a receiver again for the TD and it was 18-13.

Both teams would score in the final minutes of the first half as it was 26-21 Crest Ridge going into the locker room.

The Cougars took over the game in the third scoring three times en route to the 47-21 final tally.

Rodriguez was 5 for 8 for 70 yards passing with 1 TD and a 2-point conversion. He was also 13 for 82 rushing and returned three kicks for 93 yards with a 48-yard beauty.

Conner Peterson had 1 receiving touchdown and Kolton Phillips caught a 2-point conversion.

Jason Clancy led the defense with 10 tackles.

Cole Camp head coach Kevin Shearer commented, "They have some big bodies. We had problems tackling but all of the problems we are having are the problems we knew we would have. We are a young, young football team with a few kids who haven't played football before. We lose a couple of guys but everybody else will be back next year."

When asked about Rodriguez, he went on to say, "He is a horse and a competitor. He wants to win, which is probably his greatest attribute."

This week the Bluebirds play Lone Jack (1-3) on the road, who beat Hogan Prep, 40-24 in week 4, which could bring about their first win of the season.

Stay turned to the Benton County Enterprise for all the action and scores throughout the season.
