Calhoun Community Church
Welcome to the Good News from Calhoun Community Church. Our church family gathers at 9:30 a.m. for pre- church food and fellowship. We use this special time for visiting one with another, welcoming guests as they arrive for Worship, and signing cards of encouragement for our card ministry. We ring the church bell at 9:45 to call our church families to worship at 10:00.
Those on our prayer list include Audrey Osborne and J. C. Brown, Anita Marriott, Jeremy Reed, Patty Dump, Verna Walters, Carol Lane, Paul Diaz’s father, Debby and Clint Land, Sondra Short, Millie Redding, Amber, Patrick, and Brecklynn Dittmer, and Dave Burson. We pray for our military men and women and their families, as well as others in service jobs that we depend upon daily. We pray for guidance as we continue to grow, here on the southeast corner of the Calhoun square.
Joys to celebrate: We are pleased with the respite in the hot August weather this week, but still could use some rain. Harvesters Food Drop is the second Friday of the month here at Calhoun. Several from Calhoun Community Church participate in handing out food to those in line; each one receives a blessing for the effort. Carol Lane shared M&M cookies for pre-church fellowship, and we look forward all week for her special treats. A card was read from Sherrelyn Bell this morning. It is great to know she is doing well in her new location. Mr. Tom lit the altar candles at the beginning of our service. Special Music:
“The Love and Power of Jesus” was shared by Shelby Bicknell, and we thank him for sharing his talent.
“You Need Me” by Ann Murray on CD was shared by Steve Siercks. Mr. Steve took the offering in the absence of our youngsters today. Our guest this morning was Mr. Donald Hill. We are a diverse group here at Calhoun Community Church. We try to have a little fun as well as Praise the Lord during our church experience. Next Sunday will be our Birthday Dinner; we will have a Basement Sale August 30 & 31st as a money maker for the church. We are looking forward to the Annual Calhoun Colt Show
September 6, 7, and 8th We will have a Bake Sale and Quilt Show again this year on Saturday Sept 7th at our Church. We invite the public to bring quilts for the show. There will be a trophy for best of show. We will be raffling a quilt made by Diane Mills during this event.

On Sunday, Pastor Pat Findley delivered the 7th message in the series ‘Pray Like This’ titled “Daily Deliverance”. This message described how to have victory over sin’s temptations and Satan’s schemes. It should not surprise us when a lost world does sinful things. Even King David, a man after God’s own heart, fell into sin. Jesus teaches us to pray against the temptations of this world. 1 John reminds us that the lust of the flesh and the pride of possessions is not of God but of the world. This world and every heart is a battlefield of temptation. With God’s help, temptations become ‘tests’ that grow our faith. It is important to understand that God is not the source of temptation, but He will allow trials to strengthen our faith. God promises to provide a way out of temptation. Satan and his minions are defeated but still dangerously active. Satan and God are not equal. God is more powerful, but we need to be aware of the deceiver, who is alive and active in this world. Through prayer and His word, God helps us to be discerning. In God’s power and with His armor, we can stand in victory!

Even when we may turn our backs on God, He is gracious and merciful and ready to forgive and heal our spirits. God’s love never fails. Let us rejoice in the power of that eternal love and share it with others. “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” was the anthem this week. Rick Lingenfelter shared his talent with us on the piano playing this good old hymn. Rev. Nancy Gillard delivered the message Two Point Sermon from Ephesians 2: 11 – 21.
The annual Festival of Sharing runs into October. We will be collecting school supplies, garden seed for community gardens, old prescription glasses, Best Choice Labels and fleece blankets hand made by the Presbyterian Women. Be sure to make donations to be a part of this mission project.
The Fellowship Committee and Deacons are planning the annual Fried Chicken Dinner after worship service September 8. On that day there will be a celebration of the church building turning 100 years old in September and also special congratulations to all our graduates. Make plans to attend.
Tai Chi classes are great exercise on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:00 am. Strengthen your core and improve your balance. An advanced class is available on Mondays at 11:00 am.
You have an open invitation to come visit the friendly, welcoming people of First Presbyterian Church. We will make you feel at home. Our worship begins at 10:30 am. Check out the monthly newsletter and calendar on our website fpcclintonmo.net

“Be Careful Of What You Say”
Proverbs 17:27-28.
Sometimes people talk excessively because they want to show others what they know. They don’t know when to be quiet.
Proverbs 18:21.
As Christian, we are in, the saving of souls business, we have to be careful, we are responsible, held accountable for every word we say. It can cause someone to lose their soul.
It is sad to know that someone died who was not saved. Some people die while in a drunken state, using drugs, dealing drugs. That lost life will spend eternity in the lake of fire.
Pro 21:22.
Be careful not to upset God. If someone leaves church because they are upset with us, then Lise their lives unsaved, their blood is on our hands.
Deuteronomy 18:20-22.
To presume: to expect or assume especially with confidence; to suppose to be true without proof; to take for granted.
We don’t want to condemn a person who speaks Prophesy. If it is true it will come to pass. Wait for confirmation of the prophecy.
Jeremiah 14:11-16.
God warns us to be aware of false prophets. The Holy Ghost in you will show you what God says.
Try the spirit by the spirit. Satan can act as a righteous minister. When you give prophesy, make sure you speak what God has told you. Wait and see to make sure it comes true.
Jeremiah 28:10-17
Two prophets, one called by God and one not. God sent Jeremiah to speak to Hananiah who died by the word of the Lord. His tongue got him in trouble.
Speak what God tells you and ensure you know who God is. We want to be a good servant of God. Teach and preach according to his instructions.
Ananias and Sapphira sold a portion of their land and kept some of the money for themselves. When Peter asked Ananias why had Satan filled his heart to lie to Holy Spirit. Peter asked the same of Sapphira when she came in. She and her husband both died for lying.
They did not have to sell their property they weren’t forced to. They could have kept their property and money. Sometimes people want to keep up with what others do. Keep watch over your tongue, that it will not get you in trouble.

Where does faith come from?
A person’s own mind, decision, and free will?
Absolutely not!
Faith does not originate within a person’s own will. It comes from God, through Word and sacraments. It is a gift of God.
Faith is not the result of proof. If it were, faith would be unnecessary. We shouldn’t demand proof that Jesus was God incarnate, born of a virgin, who died and rose again, defeating death and Satan. Christians believe in God and trust in Jesus as their Savior through faith worked in them by the Holy Spirit. Proof has nothing to do with it.
Praise God.
“Jesus said to him (Thomas), “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are those who did not see, and yet believed.” (John 20:29).

We were all blessed as we gathered for worship service. Clint Keeney rang the church bell.
Mrs. Julia Klinefelter led in the congregational singing with Mrs. Dixie Collins playing piano and Mrs. Rebecca Sowell playing violin. We rejoiced with Julia Klinefelter on her birthday and with Clint and Sandra Keeney on their 53rd wedding anniversary. Randy Vogt and Lonny Bramell collected the offering.
Steve Sowell filled in for his son Pastor Joshua Sowell. The scripture passage from his sermon was from Psalm 33. This passage tells us the joy we have in Jesus and what he does for us. Love and joy are gifts the Holy Spirit gives us with our faith in Jesus. With the joy, love, and eternal life with faith in Him, we should abide in Him, pray, and read His word--the Bible. Try to make special time each day to pray and abide in Him. Have a blessed week.

Give us strength, courage, vision and faith that we might always choose that which is good, right and just in your eyes, Offer us the vision of peace and justice for all people that we may defeat the powers of hatred and evil with our love and hope.
We are an open and affirming church and welcome all to come and worship with us next Sunday morning at 9 am. We wish Laurie Stinnett, Emily Neuenschwander and Cindy McDaniel a very happy birthday! We send Happy Anniversary wishes to John and Peg Neuenschwander. The peaceful prairie surrounding the church is so beautiful as each day brings new, different flowers to enjoy!
Our sermon today was, “The Searing Pain of Betrayal”. The powerful King David was a man of control and corruption. He brought emotional and the pain of betrayal to others. But in the days to follow, David himself was in pain. He was harassed and tormented because of his own actions. Then David confessed to God and asked him to forgive him. God not only forgave him, but also forgot his sins. Just as God did for David, when we confess our sins, he also forgives us and all of our sins are forgotten. There are times in our own lives when we also cannot seem to get over betrayal. Those little things that someone says that offends us, a broken promise, a broken covenant or even a broken heart really hurts. Many times it is something that happened in the past. And in reality, it never goes away.
But God is speaking to us, telling us that we need to let go of things that happened yesterday. Jesus pulls us into the present. He knows that we cannot change the past, it is what it is. We need to let go of the pain and renew and finding the redemption that helps us move on. We are not to be anxious in our lives nor worry about the hurt from the past. Let today’s trouble be enough and do not look back, hand it over to God.
“Be still and know that I am God. I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.”
