About 8:00 PM Monday June 5, fire destroyed a hay barn which sat on the south side of Benton County Hwy. BB about 3/10 mile east of Butterfield Trail Road, torching the barn and the many hay bales it contained, plus destroying some farm machinery parked in that barn. A nearby resident who arrived at the fire said the conflagration was probably caused by an automobile which had a mechanical problem causing the driver to stop next to the barn, and the vehicle thereafter became engulfed in flames which soon spread to the barn.
The fire seemed to have continued to smolder until the morning of June 8, when the area got a little rain. No information was available concerning the safety of the vehicle's former driver.
Dick Kreisel, owner of the 60x100 ft. barn added he lost 400 bales of hay, plus a New Holland tractor and loader and the barn in that fire. He thought the driver of the automobile involved in the fire had safely exited it before it erupted in flames.
Lincoln Fire Chief Mike Rambow reported his station responded to the fire at 8:08 PM, and the Warsaw Fire Department also responded per a mutual aid agreement. His crew was at that site when the vehicle caught fire internally and transmitted it to the barn. The fire was so fierce that his crew could do little more than set a few small fires around the barn to assure that the flames did not spread to nearby pastures. He thought the vehicle's driver also escaped harm.
The Lee's Summit Dispatcher for the Missouri State Highway Patrol said June 8 the officer who was at the scene of the fire has not yet submitted a related report, but he had confirmed to her that the driver of the burned automobile left that vehicle before suffering harm.
