John Joseph Cooner, age 60, gained his wings on July 31st, 2024 after a 2 year battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

John was born in Kansas City, MO on Sept 20, 1963 to John William & Mary Ann Cooner. John graduated from Bishop O’Hara High School in 1981. He then worked and attended college before starting his career in the finance world with Beneficial Finance in 1987. In 1991 he became the manager of the Salina, KS office.

Salina was the beginning of a beautiful journey. In 1993 he met his wife Susan and started a family. Caitlyn Nicole, John Joseph Jr., and Kaci Morgan were John’s absolute pride and joy.

There were many moves, many new homes, and lots of friends made along the journey. Johns career took the family to Hutchinson & Leavenworth KS, and eventually Des Moines, IA and Tulsa, OK as he transitioned to the mortgage industry.

In 2002 John, Susan, & family would make the move to their forever home in Warsaw, MO at the “Cooner Summer home”. John loved his lake house and was incredibly excited to raise his children in a place so dear to him. Shortly after the move he transitioned into freight brokerage and worked in different facets of the transportation industry until his passing.

Growing up John loved to swim, bowl, and play baseball. He was so excited to pass the “love of the game” on to his own kids. Through the years John spent countless hours at the ball fields, basketball courts, dance recitals, volleyball games, football games, and on the road driving to tournaments, games, & practices for his kids. He was also a volunteer coach for many years & enjoyed having a positive impact on the youth in the community. Anyone who knew John, knew that if you got him started talking sports you were going to be there a while!

The nerdy side of John was an avid D&D player, classic rock jammin’, air guitar playin’, convertible riding, Star Wars watching dude.

John was an active member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Warsaw and a proud 4th degree Knight.

He enjoyed volunteering for the Knights at the community Christmas dinner, the shrimp boil, bar tending at special events, fish fry’s, or any other place his help was needed. He was a great cook and always especially loved getting to feed the crowds.

John was always family first & he spent his last years with the people he loved the most. Traveling with his wife, teaching his grands the joy of gardening, picking tomatoes, taking the big red truck to the lake, riding the Ranger, and all the simple things that country life brings.

John often spoke of leaving a legacy to be proud of and it will live on as he is survived by his wife Susan, his kids, Caitlyn (Josh), John Jr., Kaci (Jake), and his grandchildren Greyson, Janson, Remington, & Theo, as well as his sister Lisa Ann Cooner. He is preceded in death by his mother Mary Ann, father John, and step father Les Kimbrell as well as one grandson Rhett Houston Chappell.

Family and Friends are invited to the visitation, rosary, and memorial mass at St. Ann Catholic Church Warsaw, MO. Visitation: August 16th 6-7:30pm Rosary at 7:30 Memorial Mass: August 17th -11am. There will be a luncheon and celebration of life held immediately following mass at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
