Lincoln Honors 5 Year Mark Of State Champion Softball Team

Posted

Some five years ago on Saturday, May 18, the Lincoln Lady Cardinals defeated Kennett 8-3 to win the unified state softball championship. With only one class, the eighth seeded Lady Cardinals knocked off the much larger number one seed Potosi 2-1 on the Friday before to gain entrance to the title game.

This past Friday night, nine members of that 26-2 team along with their head coach Chris Sanders returned to LHS to be honored at halftime of the football game between Lincoln and Adrian. Their former uniforms were presented to the players before a nice crowd on hand for the ceremony. This is Lincoln's first and only state championship up to this point in time.

Among the many memories, one can't forget the gutsy pitching performances by Aleah Paxton, defensive plays by outfielders Chloe Reese, Genesis Smith, infielders Cadyn Paxton and freshman Jenna Vandaveer and the grand slam by Cadyn Paxton and the three run home run by Haley Mackey in the 7-0 district win at home over Wellington-Napoleon. Sorry, if we left out your favorite memory.

Also memorable, but for the wrong reason, was the pouring down rain just moments after the championship game.

As Bob Hope would say to all involved, "Thanks for the memories!"
