Rodney Walter Meyer, 86, of Warsaw, Missouri, passed away on November 6, 2024 at Research Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri with family by his side. A private memorial service for family will be held at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Concordia, Missouri. Burial will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Concordia, Missouri.
Mr. Meyer was born on January 22, 1938, in Emma, Missouri, the son of Walter and Florence (Deke) Meyer. He married Marlene Mieser of Concordia, Missouri on August 18, 1962. He attended elementary school at Holy Cross Lutheran Elementary school in Emma, Missouri and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Emma, Missouri in 1951. He graduated from Sweet Springs High School in 1955. He attended Central Missouri State University graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in 1960, Master’s degree in 1965, and an Education Specialist degree in School Administration in 1975.
He taught and coached basketball at Lincoln R-2 High School from 1960 to 1964 and at Smithton High School from 1964 to 1966. He served as the Principal at Warsaw High School from 1966 to 1993. After retiring from Education, he was elected to the Benton County Commission where he served as the Presiding Commissioner from 1995 to 2006. As Presiding Commissioner, he led the efforts to establish 911 for Benton County, Missouri. He later worked part-time for the Children Therapy Center of Sedalia as a driver.
He enjoyed spending time with his family. During his lifetime he enjoyed many hobbies including fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball, golfing, camping, fishing, and hunting. He was known for his infectious smile and laugh, and he never knew a stranger. His kindness, and funny sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.
He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Warsaw. He served as the President of both the Warsaw Lions Club and the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce. He was an active leader involved in many civic affairs and events in the Warsaw community.
Mr. Meyer is survived by his wife Marlene of Warsaw, 2 sons, Darin (Arlene) Meyer of Bakersfield, California and Andrew Meyer of Warsaw, a daughter Julie (Steve) Bruer of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, five grandchildren, Michael (Allie) Bruer of Peculiar, Missouri, Marissa (William “BJ”) Longston of Olathe, Kansas, Monica (Jaslon) Willis of Blue Springs, Missouri, Luke Meyer of Bakersfield, California, Christian Salazar of Houston, Texas, 2 great grandchildren Murray Bruer and Easton Bruer, two sisters Melba Merrick of Lee’s Summit, Missouri and Karen Joseph of North Kansas City, Missouri, brother-in-law Harland (Phyllis) Mieser of Concordia, Missouri, and sister-in-law Lavona (Richard) Larimore of Concordia, Missouri. He is preceded in death by his son Todd Meyer and 2 sisters, Patricia Johnson formerly of Kenosha, Wisconsin and Marlene Roscher formerly of Oak Grove, Missouri.
