The Cole Camp Bluebirds, coming off a season opening double-overtime victory over Wellington-Napoleon  on the road felt the other side of the coin in a 22-20 loss to Windsor last Friday at home.
Windsor scored with 37 seconds on the clock on a 50 yard pass play to a wide open Adam Hurd to tie the game at 20 all. Hurd scored the PAT for the game winner.
Cole Camp started a drive down field but a QB sack ended the game as the clock ran out.
After a scoreless first quarter, speedster Reid Harrison broke one for a 27 yard TD. The extra point failed and it was 6-0.
Grady Strathman would race into the endzone from 6 yards out to make it 12-0. The extra failed again.
With 7.9 left, Windsor scored and made the extra point making it 12-8 at halftime.
Windsor got an onside kick to start the third but failed to score. Chase Hampton drove in to put Windsor ahead at 14-12 at the 4:21 mark.
The fourth quarter was wild as Grady Strathman would catch a short TD pass and the extra point completion in the righthand corner to put Cole Camp back on top, 20-14 with 1:13 to go.
Cole Camp kicked the ball out of bounds on purpose but the re-kick from Harrison was a boomer to the 20. After moving up the field came the 55 yard pass play from QB Carter Miller to Hurd.
Coach Shearer commented, "We made too many mental mistakes. We had a fumble, lost an onside kick and allowed a man to get behind us at the end. We are younger than we look on paper. We have kids who have not played a lot of varsity football. We are making freshmen and sophomore mistakes. You can see it. You improve the most from week one to week two "
Asked about his QB,  Shearer said, "Gentry (Dieckman) took a year off and hasn't played much varsity football but in the fourth quarter he played very well and he played with passion."
Dieckman commented, "I thought it went well. It took me awhile to get used to playing again. We made some crucial errors. I got settled in at the end. All our receivers did well. This week, we scored in the first half and then at the end. Last week it took us forever to get our offense going."
Grady Strathman, their veteran senior running back and defensive standout commented,"Penalties hurt us. We played hard. Sometimes you come up short. You just have to play through it."
Asked if he (Shearer)thought about kicking a field goal at the end, Shearer said, "Yes, Reid Harrison has a leg but we are talking about a 54 yard field goal. We just weren't close enough."
Shearer went on to say, "You can't let up in high school football. We took downs off. You have to play hard every single down.  Twice this team (Bluebirds) thought they had the game won. I give the Windsor coach all of the credit in the world. They are always a well prepared football team."
Dieckman was 17 for 21 with 162 yards and a TD through the air.
Grant Rodriguez rushed 12 times for 50 yards. Harrison went 10 for 64 and Strathman was 16 for 57.
Receiving saw Harrison at 9 for 120, Rodriguez 4 for 14, Strathman 3 for 17 and Matthew Bright  1 for 11.
Bright had 12 tackles, Harrison 11 and Rodriguez contributed 10.
This week, Cole Camp (1-1) will travel to Tipton to take on the 2-0 Cardinals.
That game is slated for a 7:00 PM kickoff.
