Legion Sons Host Flag Handling

The Sons of the Legion started off the new academic year of the Lutheran School Association with their annual flag handling training, including posting and retiring the colors, as well as folding and handling the flag.

The Sons of the Legion is pleased to report that the kids took the training seriously, as they do their daily flag duties. The training program began about seven years ago when a Veteran mentioned kids didn’t know how to handle the flag.

The handling of the flag is the responsibility of the 7th and 8th grade students. It is the first year for 7th graders with the 8th graders overseeing the duties.

Pastor Allen Braun says, “They take this very seriously and I have heard an 8th grade student say, You’re not doing that right. They actually make very good instructors.”

The students handling of the flag has been noticed by people watching. A teacher noticed a couple not only watching but had photographed the procedure. Since people photographing kids in our present world is a little unsettling the teacher approached them and questioned their motive.

They responded they were so impressed the school and the Sons of the Legion were taking the time to educate the students in not only how to handle the flag but to teach them to respect it.

“You don’t see that anymore,” they said.

This prompted the Sons of the Legion to present the Lutheran School Association with a citation of appreciation for allowing them to continue their program on flag handling with the school. The Citation was received by the Principal, Dr. Scott.
